Navigation Boxes are "templates" that insert a feature box using a special code such as {{Easily Confused}}.

Contents

Using Navigation Boxes

The following Navigation Boxes are recommended when appropriate. Any others are not.

{{Adopted Child}}

Since WikiTree only allows a person to have one mother and one father, this Navigation Box has been used on profiles of adoptees in order to link both sets of parents.

However, it is very likely that this box will be deprecated or become a Profile Sticker. Plans are now under development for adding database fields for biological parents.

{{Easily Confused}}

See Help:Easily Confused for usage instructions.

{{Succession}}

See Help:Succession for usage instructions.

This box replaces the old Succession box and Succession box2.

Style Rules

The following rules apply to Navigation Boxes on profiles. Rules for Navigation Boxes on categories and other types of pages may be different.

Purpose

Navigation Boxes are intended to connect profiles that are related to each other in some significant way, and to enable easy navigation between them.

Navigation Boxes should only be created if:

  1. the relationship between the profiles cannot be fully expressed through our current database fields for parents, spouses, etc., and
  2. we expect that many users would want to navigate between the connected profiles.

The more conventional way to link profiles is in the text of the Biography or Research Notes section.

Creation and editing

Creating and editing Navigation Boxes must be done in broad collaborations, generally following the process on Developing New Rules.
